Artists Statement: Discourse at the Threshold

There is a point of crossing over that connects to the moment before, yet it represents a substantial change. It is a threshold. The crossover can be imperceptible or thunderous. Today we are experiencing many thresholds. We have shifting cultural values, an overstressed environment, and a worldwide pandemic to name a few. In this body of work, the artists seek to offer meaningful discourse. Words and images in the work are presented to the viewer in order to contemplate together complex and often overwhelming current issues.

Painter, Sally Graves Machlis, and graphic designer, Delphine Keim, combine their sensibilities in their mixed media work. The artists invite reflection through ambiguity, validation, and even dismay. We seek to find a conversation beyond assumption, finding our common desires in the interplay of text and image. As artists we hope to touch that which is universal as we are reminded of our common humanity.
