Betsey Hurd

Betsey Hurd, a BFA graduate from the University of Montana, is a sculptor and painter with a whimsical approach rooted in her love of Montana fauna. Her ceramic animal candleholders—affectionately called “animalabras”—are humorous and lively, capturing playful expressions through colorful glazes and quirky faces. These pieces reflect her childhood fascination with animals and her desire to bring joy and humor into the world, especially inspired by her Montana roots and adventures like horseback riding and ranching.

In addition to her “animalabras,” Betsey creates more serious sculptures that similarly celebrate her love for animals—horses, cows, sheep, and dogs—whose forms and symbolism inspire her work. Her art embodies a joyful reverence for the natural world and serves as a reminder of the importance of humor, joy, and the stories animals tell about the land and life she cherishes. Her work invites viewers to connect with the playful yet profound themes behind her craft.
