Accompanying the work of the featured artists for our October show will be a special presentation of paintings by Mary Frances Dondelinger.
Artist statement and bio
Mary Frances Dondelinger’s work always surprises. She juxtaposes the ancient art of egg tempera iconography onto the most disposable of backdrops, the humble paper plate. The plate-as-canvas serves as a symbol of 21st century throwaway culture, just as the creatures she so painstakingly depicts (using precious materials like 23-carat gold, egg tempera and rabbit skin glue) have become expendable in our fast moving culture.
Dondelinger apprenticed in Italy with master orthodox iconographer Don GianLuca Busi. She applies the traditional materials and theories of this sacred art form to contemporary themes such as concern for the environment.
Her work is in public and private collections and has been included in exhibits in the U.S., Scotland, Italy and most recently, in the exhibit “GOLD” at the Belvedere Palace Museum in Vienna, Austria.
Paintings of endangered species are featured in the recent publication, Modern Icons: The Sacrifice of Endangered Species of the American Southwest. Her current work will be included in the next edition featuring endangered species of the American Northwest.
MF Dondelinger splits her time between Coeur d’Alene and Tucson.
